LOG ENTRY 1: LEAVING HOME

Your name:________________________________________

Your ship’s name:______________________________

Directions:  Complete this log entry on a separate sheet of paper.  You may use as many pages as you need.  Write legible and accurately.  Be creative!

SITUATION: This is your first day at sea.  You have left port just this morning.  You are new to the crew and the ship.  You do not know anybody very well. Ahead of you lies a dangerous voyage.  You will not return to your home for almost a year.  You have heard all of the stories about the Sea of Darkness and its dangers. You have also heard of the dangers that await in the New World.

ENTRY:  Begin you entry by telling about your feelings of leaving your home, family, and friends.  Describe the ship and its crew.  Tell about one particular character aboard the ship that impresses you in some way.  Explain why you signed up to come on this voyage and what you are going to do in the New World.  Describe the route you expect to take.  Tell about any fears you may have about the voyage.  Be descriptive.  The better the entry, the more movement your ship will get.

SCORING:  You will receive 1 point for each complete, clear, well-written sentence that contains new information.  4 bonus points are available for entries that are well proof-read and contain few grammar and spelling errors. 4 additional bonus points are available for entries that are creative and include situations and language appropriate for the time period.  Your score will be averaged with your shipmates’ scores to determine how far your ship will move on the next round.
